eLearning and Medical Education in Ghana: More Health Workers at the End of the Day

Dr. Christian Osae Obirikorang chose to become a health worker because he possessed the passion to save lives. And he chose to focus on education so he could help produce more health professionals to save even more lives. “I want to help train people, so that they'll come out with quality skills to help in health care delivery,” he says.

Dr. Obirikorang earned his bachelor’s degree in laboratory technology and his PhD in chemical pathology. He’s now a lecturer in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s School of Medical Sciences in Kumasi, Ghana. He points out that, like many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has a huge need for medical professionals, especially doctors. Read more »

Christian Health Association of Ghana Chooses iHRIS for Managing and Supporting Health Workers

The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) has begun using the iHRIS software to improve management and support of over 13,500 health workers posted in its health facilities across the country.

With 184 facilities primarily located in hard-to-reach locations—where half the population of Ghana lives—CHAG is a significant provider of health care in the country. According to Samuel Nugblega, CHAG’s technical adviser on leadership, governance, and human resources, CHAG provides 20% of all out-patient and 35% of all in-patient care. Nugblega and his colleagues believe that using health workforce data from iHRIS will improve CHAG’s human resources planning and facility management, as well as boost the quality of service delivery. New Publication Spotlight: Assessing the Relevance, Efficiency, and Sustainability of HIV/AIDS In-Service Training in Nigeria

How can the health workforce continue to strengthen the quality and accessibility of HIV/AIDS services in Nigeria, where over three million people are living with the virus? One key strategy is in-service training to improve and update health workers’ knowledge and skills. At the request of USAID/Nigeria, CapacityPlus conducted an assessment of HIV/AIDS in-service training provided to Nigerian health workers through funding from the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
