Uganda Launches iHRIS Train to Track Health Worker Training

Health workforce decision-makers now have a new tool for their toolbox: iHRIS Train, software that tracks health worker training and reports on the number of health professionals being produced in a country.

New Publication Spotlight: Exploring Contraceptive Use Differentials in Sub-Saharan Africa through a Health Workforce Lens

The good news is that more and more women around the world are gaining access to family planning services. These days 56% of all married women are using a modern method of contraception, marking a big increase from less than 10% in 1960. The bad news is that only 19% of married women in sub-Saharan Africa are using a modern method of contraception. Since nearly all family planning services require assistance from a health worker, access to health workers is a principal supply-side determinant of family planning service use. Read more »

New Alliance Aims to Strengthen the Social Service Workforce

The Global Social Service Workforce Alliance officially launched on June 6. The Alliance is comprised of a collaborative network of stakeholders who will help address key social service workforce issues.

A well-planned, well-trained, and well-supported social service workforce can effectively deliver services to improve the lives of vulnerable populations. However, a number of challenges confront this workforce and limit its ability to create protective environments for children and families who face poverty, discrimination, violence, and exploitation in their daily lives. Guatemala Adopts iHRIS to Manage Health Workforce

Guatemala is the newest country to adopt the open source iHRIS software for tracking, managing, and planning the health workforce. At least 14 other countries are actively using the software. 
 
CapacityPlus develops the core iHRIS software and releases updates with improvements and new features. Because the software is open source, Guatemala and other countries can freely modify it for local needs. Read more »

New Publication Spotlight: Evidence from a Discrete Choice Experiment in Lao People’s Democratic Republic

Which incentives would motivate health workers to serve in rural and remote areas of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR), where nurses disproportionately live and work in urban centers?

To find out, the Lao Ministry of Health—with technical assistance from CapacityPlus and in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO)—used CapacityPlus’s Rapid Retention Survey Toolkit to conduct a discrete choice experiment among health professional students and practicing health workers. New Publication Spotlight: Health Informatics Education and Training Programs: Important Factors to Consider

What does the field of health informatics have to do with health workers? A new CapacityPlus technical brief explains that health informatics—the process of making health-related data accessible and useful for decision-making—is of growing importance in efforts to improve health outcomes across the globe, and makes the case that health workers must be able to use a number of different computerized resources and tools in their daily work for patient care and health service management, as well as access relevant data and be comfortable with its application. In addition, policy- and decision-makers in the health sector need up-to-date data on the health workforce and population health needs in order to plan and manage a workforce that is capable of responding to local health needs. Therefore, education and training in information technology should be part of the national investment in health systems. Read more »
